Artist Teacher Exhibition: Color Stories

The Artist Teacher Exhibition: Color Stories opening reception will be held on Saturday, October 11, from 6:00–8:00 p.m. at the Workhouse Arts Center.

This year’s exhibition features 78 art faculty from 61 FCPS schools, showcasing the incredible range and creativity of our artist teachers.

Color Stories celebrates the power of color — how it can evoke memory, emotion, and narrative, or simply be downright visually delicious! This exhibition is a vibrant tribute to the artistry and dedication of our educators. The show is on display until December 6th.

Saturday

You are invited!

The 17th annual Artist Teacher Exhibition: Materiality is currently on display at the Workhouse Arts Center. The reception is Saturday November 9th from 6:00pm - 8 :00pm. It is a beautiful show with an abundance of media to delight your eyes! I hope to see you there.

Raku Fire Workshop

Today Lewie and I spent a hot and fiery day at the Workhouse. Outings have been pretty much nonexistent, so today was such a treat! It was Lewie's first raku fire experience, and I am so happy we shared the day together.
Summer is melting away and soon he will be heading off to college (fingers crossed that Covid does not impede his next chapter too much)
There were five artists and the instructor in the workshop today. I appreciated the small number. Everyone wore masks for the entirety of the workshop and was very respectful of the distance between each other. The temperature outside was a hearty 98 degrees...that paired with the smoke and fire made for a hot day. I will say, the heat didn't even bother me, I was just so excited to be out and making art with others. The physicality of a raku fire is what I enjoy the most, of course the end results are beautiful, but there is something really awesome about being a part the collective kinetic experience of moving the pots through the glazing process with all the combustibles and spritzes.

It feels so good to be tired from delightful conversations with new friends, making art, and the ritual of the raku fire process. As I sit here tonight looking at the photos and the finished raku pieces  reflecting on the the day I can still smell the smoke in my hair! I will sleep so good tonight.

Workhouse Arts Center: RAKU

Today I had the pleasure of participating in the Raku fire at the Workhouse Arts Center in the Ceramics block!
It was a wonderful refresher and an inspiring day.
And Mother Nature was gracious and granted us perfect weather!

Raku by nature is a collaborative venture, relying on everyone present to do a different task
to complete the firing process. That is one of the reasons that I love this style of firing. It is so awesome working with
artists from different backgrounds to create this shared experience.

The word RAKU means contentment or ease.

The Workhouse is an incredible facility with a first class
artist faculty!

Brian Grow & Joe Dailey lead the Raku!

I will leave you with this to ponder... practicing and exploring a variety of media, even if it is not your "wheelhouse" will
undoubtedly inspire you and wake-up/shake-up new ideas and curiosities! I strongly suggest getting out there and trying something new or revisiting an old technique!
There is always new ground to cover.

Monday

Happy 4th of July!

                               Workhouse Arts Center               July 2016
There are many opportunities to celebrate the 4th of July in our neck of the woods!
This year we chose to
head over the the Workhouse on Saturday night.

The Workhouse has been repurposed into artist studios!
Each cell block features a variety of media, genre and local artisans.
It is a first class facility with incredible artists.
My sons and I have participated in animation classes, pottery classes, art exhibitions and even performances!

Cell Block 8: Ceramics Studio
There are continuous opportunities for community engagement. This coming weekend, July 9th, the Workhouse will host it's 8th Annual Ice Cream Social! Patrons can purchase a beautifully crafted bowl created by the artists at the Workhouse to load up with tasty ice cream treats! All the proceeds benefit the ceramics program.

We are so fortunate to have such an incredible multi-purposed community arts center nearby!
A great choice for a celebration our nation
and the freedoms we enjoy this July 4th.
It was a lovely weather night, perfect for fireworks!
