Each year I take about 50 students to the Big Apple with my partner in crime, the studio art teacher, for an overnight experience rich in art, culture and on-location photo opportunities! This year was no exception, however Mother Nature did throw us a curve ball of about 5 inches of snow that delayed our adventure by one week. This year we toured the Museum of Modern Art, finding some old friends and stumbling onto some new favorites! Our docent Gordon was informative and took us through the highlights and allowed me to share some of my favorites as well! Salvador Dali's Persistence of Memory continues to delight me each time I encounter it!
A new experience this year was visiting the Cooper Hewitt Museum! There we had the opportunity to think about the design process and how it impacts our everyday needs and experiences. The students were given a dilemma of design and function to solve in collaborative groups as well as tour and view the variety to objects and collections housed inside the gorgeous museum that was once Andrew Carnegie's home!
A favorite room in the museum was definitely an interactive wall paper design center! The students were able to draw their own design and then share it with the entire room!
The students had the opportunity to explore and photograph Central Park! It was chilly, but beautiful and a photographers delight!
The cold weather did not deter us from taking our cameras out an about in Times Square after dinner! The students love the opportunity to practice their photography skills after having a good dinner with their friends!
Some of us even wandered over to Rockefeller Center to play with light and capture ghosts!
Saturday morning always arrives so fast and early! We spent the morning in SOHO taking photos and trying not to let the rain dampen our spirits! The photography students participated in a Lomography photo shoot using a variety of Diana and mini-Diana film cameras. I am looking forward to seeing what develops! The studio art students went to check out the ever iconic art warehouse, New York Central Art Supply.
Our day ended in the Chelsea Gallery district. We ate in the very cool and unique Chelsea Market. And then met up with the always amazing and informative Merrily Kerr for a dynamic tour of the hottest exhibits in Chelsea! Merrily always does an outstanding tour for both groups, photo centric and eclectic studio!
It was a great experience. The students learned so much and captured incredible photographs! This was all executed with the wonderful help of Mulvihill Tours!
