New York City 2015

Each year I take about 50 students to the Big Apple with my partner in crime, the studio art teacher,  for an overnight experience rich in art, culture and on-location photo opportunities! This year was no exception, however Mother Nature did throw us a curve ball of about 5 inches of snow that delayed our adventure by one week. The itinerary changes each year along with the individuals who are in my class and what we are learning...

This year we toured the Museum of Modern Art, finding some old friends and stumbling onto some new favorites! Our docent Gordon was informative and took us through the highlights and allowed me to share some of my favorites as well! Salvador Dali's Persistence of Memory continues to delight me each time I encounter it!

A new experience this year was visiting the Cooper Hewitt Museum! There we had the opportunity to think about the design process and how it impacts our everyday needs and experiences. The students were given a dilemma of design and function to solve in collaborative groups as well as tour and view the variety to objects and collections housed inside the gorgeous museum that was once Andrew Carnegie's home

A favorite room in the museum was definitely an interactive wall paper design center! The students were able to draw their own design and then share it with the entire room!

The students had the opportunity to explore and photograph Central Park! It was chilly, but beautiful and a photographers delight!

The cold weather did not deter us from taking our cameras out an about in Times Square after dinner! The students love the opportunity to practice their photography skills after having a good dinner with their friends!

Some of us even wandered over to Rockefeller Center to play with light and capture ghosts!

Saturday morning always arrives so fast and early! We spent the morning in SOHO taking photos and trying not to let the rain dampen our spirits! The photography students participated in a Lomography photo shoot using a variety of Diana and mini-Diana film cameras. I am looking forward to seeing what develops! The studio art students went to check out the ever iconic art warehouse, New York Central Art Supply.

Our day ended in the Chelsea Gallery district. We ate in the very cool and unique Chelsea Market. And then met up with the always amazing and informative Merrily Kerr for a dynamic tour of the hottest exhibits in Chelsea! Merrily always does an outstanding tour for both groups, photo centric and eclectic studio!

It was a great experience. The students learned so much and captured incredible photographs! This was all executed with the wonderful help of Mulvihill Tours! Jimmy is great at taking our special requests and making it happen! If you would like previous itineraries or other Field Trip ideas please do not hesitate to email me with your questions!

Emerging Visions: Reconstruction

  Emerging Visions: Reconstruction

This month make your way to the Greater Reston Arts Center!  These students have been brainstorming, creating and responding to the idea of Reconstruction since November when they visited the gallery to see how artists interpret a like theme in different ways.

These students contemplated complex issues such as memory, identity, religion, love and recovery in order to best visually define reconstruction. They explored mixed media, painting, image transfer, and photography as a means to answer the pondering of what reconstruction looks like to them as individuals. Friday night was the reception and it was packed house with enthusiastic and curious viewers!

The Emerging Visions show is on display until April 4th.
12001 Market Street, Suite 103, Reston, VA 20190

Thank you to the Greater Reston Arts Center for giving our students the opportunity to experience this very intense and professional gallery opportunity.
The OHS Art Department is very proud of these artists!

The Winter that Won't End...

Apologies for falling off the grid for that last couple of months. I have fallen prey to the winter blues this year...

Globe Dye Works!

This past Friday I had the pleasure of taking my students to Philadelphia for a day trip! We went to the Globe Dye Works warehouse nestled in the industrial part of the city. We learned about the history of the building and the renewed vision for the space.

We spent the day meeting with artists, bakers, entrepreneurs, coffee roasters and ice cream makers!

Seeing the industrial spaces reconstructed into work areas and studios was inspiring!

We even found American painter John Moore in his studio working on a painting inspired by the warehouse itself!

It is truly where art meets industry. Fraught with creativity, collaboration and makers' visions this is an up and coming location not to be missed!

The best part was watching the students drink in all the information and document the surroundings.

**It was lovely to spend a day with students that I have had the pleasure of teaching for four years!
