Passion realized ...validated...so grateful.

November has proven to be one for the books! I have been an art educator for 20+ years. It is my life's passion, I say that truly...I love to be in a space where there is so much possibility and raw creativity. It is what gets me out of bed in the morning.
Asking questions and facilitating the creative experiences of mostly curious yet angsty teenagers creates days of wild times and incredible ah-ha light bulb moments.
I learn new things daily and it is always changing. Well, I want to tell you that I was named the Virginia Secondary Art Educator of the year at the VAEA state conference this year! This is such a lovely honor and I am so grateful.
My family was even invited to the awards breakfast! And that is the cherry on top! I am so fortunate to have a great husband that supports me, even when he thinks my ideas are a little crazy! My sons revel in the insanity that sometimes results from our incredibly busy schedule. However they also benefit, I strive include them in everything! And as a result they have an amazing extended family they would have not met otherwise!
My work ethic is fierce and my passion for the process of art making is invigorated daily in the studio, darkroom and classroom. I am one of the lucky ones that realized how I need to spend my life.  Thank you VAEA for the incredible honor and validating my purpose!

Monday

Painting with Light and Everything Bright...

Had a blast this afternoon practicing light painting with my department today!
Look out we are ready to inspire MADNESS.
You can never practice enough, it is such fun!
We will be presenting our play at VAEA this weekend!!!

The Department

The official 2017 Art Department photographs!
Can you guess who is who?

I was completely inspired by another art department at a near by school, they have a rich tradition of creating memorable department photos! Thanks for the inspiration Nicole!

Artist Teacher Exhibition 2017

Tickled to be a part of this Artist Teacher show again!
The opportunity to share my work never gets old. Pleased to have my artwork hanging along side my fellow art educators.
Join us Saturday night for the reception at the Workhouse.

Excursions with students...

Lately we have been on the move...

The coolest experiences with students stem from the explorations outside the classroom!
It is such a pleasure to take students out and about...
it doesn't matter if it is a museum, gallery, or just a walk around town,
these are the moments I treasure!

Monday

Masterwork Reboot

Visiting my Aunt & Uncle in Ohio this past May...they were great sports and allowed me to play with the idea of reinterpreting

A home and farm founded in 1940, the Geisler Homestead.
Authentic living.

Saturday

Workhouse Arts Center: RAKU

Today I had the pleasure of participating in the Raku fire at the Workhouse Arts Center in the Ceramics block!
It was a wonderful refresher and an inspiring day.
And Mother Nature was gracious and granted us perfect weather!

Raku by nature is a collaborative venture, relying on everyone present to do a different task
to complete the firing process. That is one of the reasons that I love this style of firing. It is so awesome working with
artists from different backgrounds to create this shared experience.

The word RAKU means contentment or ease.

The Workhouse is an incredible facility with a first class
artist faculty!

Brian Grow & Joe Dailey lead the Raku!

I will leave you with this to ponder... practicing and exploring a variety of media, even if it is not your "wheelhouse" will
undoubtedly inspire you and wake-up/shake-up new ideas and curiosities! I strongly suggest getting out there and trying something new or revisiting an old technique!
There is always new ground to cover.
